The Student Practicum Experience
I wanted to wish you each the best for your practicums. Drink in the experience and exploit your time with employers for all it is worth. Ask lots of questions about their businesses and be curious about where their focus is and how things get done.
As a favour to me, I wondered if you might visit our blog a few times during your practicum and contribute posts toward how you are finding the practicum experience.

Tigers, Penguins, Windows... and Panda?
Well now, a chinese company is compiling a OS completely composed of chinese charaters. Wow Simply wow, where is the development world exacly going? With a language as complex as chinese, the freedom of usability multiplys tenfold compared to the english language, but at the same time, programing a structure to understand all the nessecary characters would be no little task. Just another growing landmark in technology to keep our busy eyes on, I wonder where this will lead to.

Films on phones?
The film industry is now dubbing the mobile phone "the fourth screen". Short films are being specially made for the mobile platform. One such movie 'A Slip in Time' a production of the Sundance Global Film Festival. Is being screened at the 3GSM mobile phone conference in Barcelona this week. The creators of the film are Johnathan Dayton & Valerie Faris the couple behind the Oscar nominated 'Little Miss Sunshine'.
Daynton told the BBC Digital Planet Program, "This is a great medium and i feel it's only in it's infancy. Like all things it will take a while to find its clearest truest form, but i think you see hints of it with things like you tube".
A Slip in Time is a short slapstick farce, with minimal dialogue. The Sundance Film Festival has embraced it as an new way forward for independant film makers. Dayton went on to say, " I think mobile phones are well suited for issue-based filmmaking, but i think doing something for an hour and a half is pushing it."
This obviously makes sense and of course we are seeing similar content on videocasts for ipods. Mobile users want something they can access quickly to kill time with when commuting or waiting for a doctor's appointment. Short films on hot topics like climate change would be my preference. Films are often a good way to gain insight on hotly debated issues. What films would like to watch on your mobile (besides the type Telus recently made available) and why?

English or American Apple's?
Those of you familiar with the hilarious nonsense that is the peep show (English sitcom) will recognise the stars of the new UK apple adverts.

Searching for unifying message and visual theme for the grad show
Getting ready for the grad show will require collaborative work between students, faculty and a number of outside providers. A graphic theme of "Soviet Propaganda" has been selected, while the message and communications mix to promote the event are not yet finalized.
A message of "Emerging Technologies for Improving Business Opportunities" has been suggested. While it ties in with the component of propaganda as being communications which influence the opinions of people, the more known aspect of propaganda as being deliberately misleading to achieve a desired end point raises some concerns about tying these two concepts together. Not impossible to resolve, but one that would require creative input from the people in charge of planning the grad show. Would I want to attend a show where the information I get could be misleading for an ulterior motive?
This post came right from the wiktionary wiki we are using as a collaborative work tool. I wanted to alert you to this in this blog, and encourage your participation here and in the wiki
to hammer out the key theme elements for the grad show.
The wiki is the collaborativc work space to support solving this problem, and the blog is the more linear communications tool to express your ideas and feelings on this topic.

Wiki Watch
Since we have been talking a lot about wikis I thought I would share a couple of cool wikis that I've come across lately.
The First: WikiTravel
This seems like a very active community of wiki'ers who are creating a really great resources for everybody. Do you think that you would consult something like this before taking a trip?
The Second: Amapedia
This is an Amazon wiki that lets users write the product information. Not too sure how this will end up being all that different than the Amazon site, but it is still interesting to see one of the biggest e-commerce sites embracing wiki technology.
Have you found any other interesting wikis?

It is very similar to the New Media BC initiative, Sprokit. They created a Competency Dictionary and which you can rate yourself on levels 1 - 4 for each. You can also create and account and update your stats as you grow.
Jeremy also posted a really great diagram entitled “The Universe of User Experience”. Over the years I have seen a lot of these types of diagrams, but it’s still cool to see people’s interpretation of UX.
